I said no.

Why? Because their core statement revealed the problem: "We want to see if our idea is worth pursuing." They had no existing audience, no validated customer base, no proof of demand. Just an idea and enthusiasm.

Here's what most founders miss: if you're truly testing market demand, your MVP should take one day to build—not three months. Even with AI and no-code tools like Bubble, building a complex platform takes significant time. But your first MVP shouldn't be a product at all.

Walk into any startup accelerator today, and you'll hear the same advice: "Build fast, fail fast, iterate fast." The AI community has taken this to heart, pushing founders toward complex technical solutions before they understand their market.

Here's what the industry typically recommends for AI MVPs:

  1. Start with the AI feature - Build the most sophisticated AI component first to "differentiate" your product

  2. Use no-code platforms extensively - Bubble, Webflow, and similar tools are positioned as the solution to every technical challenge

  3. Integrate multiple AI APIs - Connect OpenAI, Claude, and custom models to show "comprehensive AI capabilities"

  4. Focus on technical feasibility - Prove the AI works before validating if anyone wants it

  5. Launch with full features - Build a complete product to "wow" early users

This conventional wisdom exists because it sounds logical. AI is complex, so building it should be complex, right? Platforms like Bubble have made development more accessible, so why not build everything?

But here's where this approach falls short: it assumes your biggest risk is technical execution, when it's actually market validation. Most AI startups fail not because they couldn't build the technology, but because they built technology nobody wanted.

I've seen too many founders spend months perfecting AI features for problems that don't exist. The real challenge isn't "Can we build this?" but "Should we build this?"

The client I mentioned earlier had all the classic symptoms of AI MVP confusion. They wanted to test market demand by building a complex two-sided platform. Their reasoning seemed sound: "We need to see if users will actually use our AI matching algorithm."

But dig deeper, and the problems became obvious. They had no existing audience, no validated customer pain points, no evidence that their "revolutionary AI approach" solved a real problem. They just had enthusiasm and a big budget.

This reminded me of a pattern I'd seen repeatedly in my consulting work. Founders confuse building with validating. They think the only way to test an AI concept is to build the AI.

I've worked on enough product validation projects to know this approach usually ends in disaster. The client spends months building, launches to crickets, then realizes they solved the wrong problem for the wrong people.

So instead of taking their money to build a platform they didn't need, I gave them advice that initially shocked them: "If you're testing market demand, your MVP should take one day to build, not three months."

Here's what I recommended instead:

Day 1: Create a simple landing page explaining the value proposition
Week 1: Start manual outreach to potential users on both sides of the marketplace
Week 2-4: Manually match supply and demand via email/WhatsApp
Month 2: Only after proving demand, consider building automation

Their reaction was predictable: "But we want to test our AI algorithm!" That's exactly the wrong mindset. Your MVP should test your business model and customer need, not your technical implementation.

The lesson? Your MVP should be your marketing and sales process, not your product. Distribution and validation come before development, especially in the age of AI where building has never been easier but knowing what to build remains the hardest challenge.

What I ended up doing and the results.

Here's the counterintuitive playbook I've developed after watching too many AI MVPs fail and a few succeed spectacularly:

Step 1: The Paper MVP (Day 1)
Instead of opening Bubble, I start with a Google Doc or Notion page. Write out exactly what your AI would do, for whom, and why they'd pay for it. If you can't explain it clearly in writing, you're not ready to build it.

Create a simple landing page with your value proposition. Use tools like Carrd or even a single HTML page. The goal isn't to impress—it's to capture interest and start conversations.

Step 2: Manual AI Simulation (Week 1-2)
This is where the magic happens. Instead of building AI, become the AI. If your product is supposed to match job seekers with employers, you manually do the matching. If it's supposed to generate content, you write the content yourself.

This manual approach reveals insights no amount of technical building can provide. You discover edge cases, user preferences, and workflow issues that would take months to uncover through traditional development.

Step 3: The Wizard of Oz MVP (Week 3-4)
Now you can introduce some automation, but keep it simple. Use Zapier workflows, Google Forms, and email sequences to create the illusion of a more sophisticated system while keeping manual processes behind the scenes.

For example, when someone submits a request through your "AI-powered" form, it triggers a Zapier workflow that sends you an email. You manually process the request and send back results that appear automated to the user.

Step 4: Bubble for Process Automation (Month 2)
Only now do I consider Bubble or similar platforms. But here's the key: I'm not building AI features. I'm building workflow automation for the processes I've already validated manually.

Bubble becomes a database and user interface layer, not an AI development platform. I use it to systematize the manual processes that I know work, not to experiment with untested AI concepts.

Step 5: AI Integration Points (Month 3+)
With validated workflows and proven user demand, I can finally justify AI integration. But even then, I start with simple API calls to proven services like OpenAI rather than building custom models.

The AI enhancement comes after I understand exactly what users need, how they want to interact with the system, and what outcomes they value most.

This approach completely flips the traditional AI MVP timeline. Instead of starting with the most complex technical component, you start with the simplest validation method and add complexity only when justified by user demand.

The results of this approach speak for themselves, though they're harder to measure in traditional metrics because success is defined by what you don't build rather than what you do.

From my experience advising startups on MVP strategy:

Time to Market: Validation happens in 1-4 weeks instead of 3-6 months. You're getting real user feedback while your competitors are still building.

Cost Efficiency: Initial validation costs under $100 (domain, hosting, basic tools) compared to $10,000-50,000 for a typical Bubble-based AI MVP.

Quality of Insights: Manual simulation reveals user behavior patterns that automated systems mask. You understand not just what users do, but why they do it.

Pivot Speed: When you discover your initial hypothesis is wrong (which happens 80% of the time), you can pivot in days rather than rebuilding for months.

The most important result is what doesn't happen: you don't waste months building features nobody wants. In a world where AI capabilities are becoming commoditized, the real competitive advantage is understanding your market deeply and moving fast based on validated learning.

The founders who follow this approach may not have the fanciest demos, but they have something more valuable: proven demand and clear understanding of their customers' needs.

After guiding multiple AI MVP projects through this process, here are the key lessons that consistently emerge:

  1. Distribution beats development every time. The constraint isn't building; it's knowing what to build and for whom. Perfect technology is worthless without proven demand.

  2. Manual simulation reveals truths automation hides. When you manually perform your "AI" functions, you discover edge cases, user preferences, and workflow issues that would take months to uncover through development.

  3. Users care about outcomes, not technology. Nobody wakes up wanting "AI-powered" anything. They want problems solved. Focus on the solution, not the technology behind it.

  4. Bubble works best for validated workflows. Use it to systematize processes you've already proven manually, not to experiment with unvalidated concepts.

  5. Complexity kills learning speed. The more complex your initial build, the slower you learn what actually matters to users.

  6. Market validation and technical validation are different skills. Most founders are good at building but terrible at validating. Separate these phases deliberately.

  7. The best AI MVP might not include AI. If manual processes solve the user's problem effectively, AI becomes an optimization, not a necessity.

What I'd do differently: Start even simpler. Even my "Day 1 landing page" approach might be too complex. Sometimes a series of conversations or a simple survey provides faster validation than any digital product.

Common pitfalls to avoid: Don't fall in love with the technology. Don't confuse technical complexity with market sophistication. Don't optimize for investor impressions over user value.
