Agencies sell this dream because it sounds sophisticated. Software companies build tools around this promise because it creates dependency. And marketers buy into it because we all want certainty in an uncertain world.
But here's what nobody talks about: the more sophisticated your attribution model, the more it falls apart in practice. Real customer journeys are messy, non-linear, and happen across devices, browsers, and months of consideration time.

Let me tell you about the moment I realized how broken this whole approach is. I was working with an e-commerce client who was absolutely obsessed with attribution. They had built this incredibly sophisticated tracking system - custom UTM parameters for every campaign, enhanced e-commerce tracking, cross-domain tracking, the works.

What I ended up doing and the results.
Instead of building better tracking, I took a completely different approach with this client. I called it "Distribution Reality Testing" - focusing on what actually moves the business forward rather than what the data says moved the business forward.

Step 1: The Channel Pause Test
