I said no.
Here's why—and what this taught me about the real purpose of MVPs in the AI era. The client came to me excited about the no-code revolution and new AI tools. They'd heard these tools could build anything quickly and cheaply. They weren't wrong—technically, you can build a complex AI-powered platform with modern tools.
But their core statement revealed the problem: "We want to see if our AI idea is worth pursuing."
They had no existing audience, no validated customer base, no proof that people wanted their AI solution. Just an idea and enthusiasm for the latest AI trend.

This approach exists because we're in an AI gold rush. VCs are funding AI projects at unprecedented rates, no-code tools make AI development accessible, and everyone wants to be part of the "AI revolution." The assumption is that AI automatically makes your product better, more valuable, more fundable.
The problem? This advice treats AI as the solution rather than a tool. It starts with the technology and hopes to find a problem it can solve. Most AI MVPs built this way are solutions looking for problems, not problems being solved by the right tool.
Even worse, this traditional approach encourages founders to spend months building AI capabilities nobody wants, then wonder why their sophisticated models generate zero traction. You end up with impressive technology that doesn't create value for real users.
The real issue isn't the AI itself—it's the sequence. Most founders are trying to build AI products before they understand what problem really needs solving.

When that client approached me about building their AI-powered marketplace, they were caught up in the AI excitement of 2024. They'd researched the latest tools like Bubble, Lovable, and various AI APIs. They weren't wrong about the technical possibilities.
But their core statement revealed the fundamental flaw: "We want to see if our AI idea is worth pursuing."
They had no existing audience, no validated customer base, no proof that people wanted their specific solution. Just an idea and enthusiasm for AI technology. This is when I realized something crucial about minimum viable AI products.
I told them something that initially shocked them: "If you're truly testing market demand for an AI solution, your MVP should take one day to build—not three months."
Their response was predictable: "But how can we test AI capabilities without building the AI?" This question revealed the core misunderstanding. They thought they were testing AI when they were actually testing demand for a solution.
Here's what I've learned working with multiple clients in the AI space: people don't buy AI—they buy solutions to their problems. If AI happens to be the best tool for solving that problem, great. But the AI isn't the value proposition.
This client wanted to build a complex two-sided marketplace with AI matching algorithms. But they'd never manually matched two sides of their intended market. They'd never validated that people on either side actually wanted to be matched. They were betting months of development time on assumptions.
The conversation that followed changed how I think about AI MVPs entirely.
My experiments
What I ended up doing and the results.
Instead of building their AI marketplace platform, I recommended what I now call the "Manual-First AI Validation" approach. Here's the exact process I walked them through:
Week 1: Problem Validation (No Code)

Month 3+: Intelligent Automation
The key insight: your minimum viable AI product should be your marketing and sales process, not your AI model. You need to prove people want the outcome before you optimize how you deliver it.
This approach flips traditional AI development on its head. Instead of starting with "what cool AI thing can we build?" you start with "what problem exists that might benefit from intelligent automation?"
Most importantly, this process teaches you whether AI is even the right solution. Sometimes simple automation works better. Sometimes human expertise is irreplaceable. Sometimes the problem doesn't exist at all.
By the time you're ready to build AI features, you understand exactly what they need to accomplish and how to measure their success.
This manual-first approach completely changed the trajectory of that client project. Instead of spending $XX,XXX on a complex platform that might not work, they started with conversations.
Within two weeks, they had conducted over 50 interviews with potential users on both sides of their marketplace. The results were eye-opening: the original AI matching concept wasn't what users actually wanted.
Through manual matching attempts, they discovered that successful connections required human context and relationship nuances that would be extremely difficult to automate effectively. The value wasn't in algorithmic matching—it was in quality screening and relationship facilitation.
By month three, they had a waiting list of users who wanted their service, a clear understanding of what made successful matches, and a validated business model. Most importantly, they knew exactly where AI could add value and where human expertise was irreplaceable.
This experience taught me that the most successful AI products start with manual processes, not with AI models.
